The Boy With The Scar Who Stole My Heart!

At 13, I was in love. Yes. I was. I know I was. It wasn't normal to go through so many emotions without being completely over the top, head over heels in love. Of course, I was in fictional love, a lot of other loves followed but this one still strikes as my first. I've owned a library card ever since I was 11 or 12 perhaps. I picked up Harry Potter, I don't know how or why. May be somebody spoke about it, may be it was an accident. At 13, I was bitten by the Potter bug. When I picked it up, Harry Potter was just another book. Well, I didn't know my life would be changed by The Boy Who Lived.

7 books, 8 movies later I still am not over Harry Potter. I cannot be. I don't think I'll EVER be. What Harry brought to my life (other than British accents and men (and women) was exactly what I needed, I am an only child and growing up isn't as tough as it is made out to be, I had a ball of a time, but that was because I was never ignored, I was always dealt with 'on priority' much like Harry at Hogwarts and the Lord knows I have a penchant for getting in trouble.

Soon I started seeing my Ron's and my Hermione's around me, if you see my twitter profile it says 'wannabe geek' Hermione was my idol, I wanted to be Hermione, I would do anything to be as smart as her. Sadly, the only time I've felt like Hermione in school was during Biology and English class, I would read my textbooks "for fun". Yes. Recently though, I was in a 'book' quiz a few weeks ago in office where even before the quiz master finished his questions my hand was in the air, I won a few chocolates for it, so I'm happy.

I am Ron, I am clumsy, I am kind of thick skulled at times, I think I know something but then I get in trouble and realise it wasn't for me. I'm Ron in the only sense that I trust my friends to save my life and I have a few who will count on me, That's all that really matters. Also, I play a mean game of Scrabble. As a child I had wanted a pet rat and I find them adorable even now.

Harry Potter defined childhood for me, I was too lost in Hogwarts to know how beautifully the themes translate into real life. How stories about friendship, love, faith, hope, family translate into our lives. How you need that 'guide' like Dumbledore who'll help you sail through. How you need a 'task master' like McGonagall who'll ensure that you stay out of trouble. How there is always a guardian angel like Lily and James or even Snape. We all have our Voldemort, a personal demon we have to defeat to survive. How having a fun and serious adult like Sirius in your life is important. How not all bad people are bad like Draco. How not all weak people are weak like Neville. How being weird is not a bad thing like Luna. Harry is proof that bad things will happen and then will continue to weigh you down for the rest of your life. You just try to make the most of whatever is left of yourself. Also, It is never too bad to get in trouble or just have a little bit of fun like Fred and George.

I was made to love Harry, we even share a birthday! July 31!

  1. It's very special to connect to a story in that way. For me it's the Dark Tower series by Stephen King but, I do have to admit, I like the story of Harry Potter as well.

  4. I simply admire how you have equated each character to yourself! Well done, you. And ahem, if I were to be a character in HP, who would I be, in your opinion? ;)

  14. Lovely post. I was someone, who hated these fantasy, magical books. I believed that they did not belong to my taste at all. HANDS DOWN. I also have three cousins who used to stand in queue since the eve of this book launch only to grab a copy before it was sold out. I still didn’t get motivated enough to read’em. It was when I didn’t have anything to read and I asked Mom to lend me money to buy the entire series. Obviously she didn’t allow me to spend that much on some childish fantasy-as I used to portray them. Oh, don’t give me that look :( So it was due to this sheer bullheadedness, that I downloaded the entire collection of e-books and in a matter of five days, I finished the complete series. Oh, yeah…now I’m a huge huge fan. :) :)
